Kalandra

Project

Installation

A functional language for parallel and distributed programming. The next chapter of Clio.

Install the Kalandra CLI from npm, create a project, and run your first parallel program. Kalandra 0.13.0 uses Bun to run its compiler, local workers, and remote services.

Install Bun

Use Bun 1.3.12 or newer. Bun is the runtime; npm is the package registry distributing Kalandra. Installing the CLI does not install Bun for you.

Install Bun for your operating system

Confirm it is available in your terminal:

bash
bun --version

Install Kalandra

Install the version used by this guide from the npm registry:

bash
bun add --global @kalandra/cli@0.13.0
kalandra --version
kalandra --help

The version output should identify Kalandra 0.13.0. If your shell cannot find kalandra, run `bun pm bin -g` and add the printed directory to your PATH, then open a new terminal.

Create and run a project

Choose a directory where you keep your projects. The destination my-app must not already exist:

bash
kalandra new my-app
cd my-app
kalandra run src/main.kalandra --strict

The starter contains two modules and a typed parallel function. The result is [2, 4, 6]. Project creation is offline: it writes the starter without installing dependencies or initializing Git. You do not need to clone the compiler repository.

Check and build

Check one source file without executing it:

bash
kalandra check src/math.kalandra --strict

Build the project and its imported modules as JavaScript:

bash
kalandra build src/main.kalandra -o build --strict

To rebuild when source files change:

bash
kalandra build src/main.kalandra -o build --strict --watch

Use `kalandra run` for managed parallel execution. It builds the program, invokes its exported main function, prints the result, and closes the workers. A project build writes JavaScript and source maps; it does not run the program or produce a portable deployment bundle.

Write your first program

Source files use the .kalandra extension. Follow the first lesson to write and run a small program, then explore functions, records, and parallel calls.

Editor support

Syntax highlighting and the language server are separate from the CLI. Editor integration is currently manual; a one-click editor extension is not part of this preview. The contributor guide describes the existing source and built language-server setup.

Working on Kalandra itself

You only need a toolchain checkout to contribute to the compiler, runtime, or website, or to run the repository's integration examples.
